the art of the pointe shoe
Since 1947, Maison Repetto has accompanied dancers in their quest to rise. A true symbol of lightness and grace, the pointe shoe embodies the perfect alliance of technical skill and beauty. Entirely handmade in our workshops in the Dordogne, each pointe shoe reflects a unique savoir-faire, inherited from the world of dance and elevated by the emblematic stitch-and-return technique.
It all begins with cutting the sole, punched out of large sheets of leather using cutting dies.
Each sole is then marked with the size, the model reference and the Maison's distinctive logo.
At the same time, the upper, the satin shell lined with cotton, is carefully edged and assembled inside out, before being placed on a last to ensure the fabric holds properly.
Finally, a wedge is positioned to precisely adjust the throat line and the height of the vamp.
The characteristic satin pleats are made entirely by hand. This meticulous work requires patience and precision to give the shoe a harmonious look.
Once the pleats are perfectly formed, the sole is sewn inside out using the stitch-and-return technique, the signature of the Maison.
The shoe is then turned right side out, revealing a soft, satiny shape similar to a demi-pointe.
The box, the rigid part that allows dancers to rise onto pointe, is shaped from a mixture of papers and natural glues.
As it dries, this material becomes solid while remaining adjustable. It is inserted between the inner lining and the outer satin, giving the dancer optimal support without compromising comfort or the delicacy of the line.
The shank, a rigid piece inserted into the sole, is attached with glue and staples. An essential support element, it follows the curve of the foot and reinforces stability on pointe.
Once the structure is complete, the shoe is placed back on the last and baked in an oven at high temperature to set its shape.
Finally, every detail, stitching, finishing, quality control, is checked and refined by hand by our artisans.
